Faculty

Our faculty are distinguished scholars recognized for their research and publication; they are also first-rate teachers and mentors. They specialize in many areas of French and Francophone literature and civilization from the Medieval period to the 21st Century.

Her interests include 19th-21st century literatures; literature and the visual arts; psychoanalysis and literature; contemporary theory; Francophone literature and thought of the Middle East. She is currently at work on a book-length project on Rimbaud and Impressionism.

Medieval and 17th-century literature and culture; comparative literature (French and British); theatre; generalist.

Dr. Holder has studied at the Sorbonne, Middlebury College, and the Detroit Conservatory of Music. She was a lectrice at the Université de Haute Bretagne and served on the editorial staff of Allegorica. Her interests include Scottish Country dancing, opera, her 1904 baby grand piano, travel, biography, and cooking for friends who will try anything once!

Sharla Martin's Blog

Ms. Martin studied at the Sorbonne and spent 5 years teaching at Greenville College in Illinois prior to coming to UTA in 1997 to work as supervisor of lower division French. Ms. Martin’s interests include sociolinguistics, language learning, and cultural anthropology. She has lived in Brazil, so she speaks Portuguese and is working on learning Italian.

Blake Carpenter's Blog

Mr. Carpenter has studied at the Université de Montpellier and was a lecturer in English at the Université de Nice. He has taught French at both the university and secondary levels and serves as one of the undergraduate advisors for the Modern Language Department. He is also a reviewer and contributing writer for Holt, Rinehart, and Winston Publishers.

Corinne Griffin's Blog

Ms. Griffin began studying French as a child in Louisiana. Her interests include 19th–21st century literature, promoting the Québécois culture, and studying abroad. She has participated in the UTA in Paris program and has spent time living in Besançon, Dijon, and Compiègne, France, as well as Montréal, Canada. Currently, she is anxiously awaiting the decisions regarding her Ph.D. applications.

Ms. Soueid returned to UTA for her Master's in French after receiving a B.B.A. in Accounting as an undergraduate. In addition to French, she has studied Latin and Arabic and is currently studying Spanish. She has traveled in both Europe and the Middle East and has taught at the primary, secondary, and university levels.
