UTA Summer in Paris 2010: Courses
June 6–28, 2010
French 2313/2314 Intensive, 6 credits (Dr. Aimée Israel-Pelletier)
This program covers material from the third and fourth semester language classes. You will continue the course of study from FREN 1441 and 1442 as you learn new language skills. The exciting part of this intensive course is the fact that you take what you learn in class out onto the streets immediately. You will find yourself in the "marché" buying dinner, in the "pâtisserie" sampling pastries for your assignments, at the newsstand or in the supermarket analyzing what is offered for sale.
French 3316, 3 credits (Dr. Kimberly van Noort)
French 3316—Public Discourse in/about the City. In this course we will examine the various uses of language in the urban setting of Paris and the nature of how the city represents itself through language. The media, museum and monument presentations, billboards, signs, conversations and guides will form the corpus we will study. Students will gain understanding of the types of discourse and texts employed in the city and will hone their own oral skills through a variety of hands-on projects.
French 4338, 3 credits (Dr. Kimberly van Noort)
French 4338—History of Paris. The origins and evolution of the city of Paris, "capital of the world" in the nineteenth century, will form the basis of this course. We will study the history of Paris through direct contact with the city. From the Roman arena and baths, to medieval neighborhoods, Renaissance structures, "grands hotels" of the 17th & 18th centuries, Haussmann's boulevards, Art Deco buildings of the early 20th century and the modern lines of the newest urban projects, we will trace the social, political and architectural history of Paris.
