Deutscher Samstag: German Immersion Day at the University of North Texas (UNT)

Are you interested in daylong total immersion in German with high school students?

On Saturday, April 12, 2008, students, teachers, and Germanophiles from throughout the region will gather at the University of North Texas in Denton for a morning filled with the sights and sounds of Germany.

As you arrive, you enter a world where German opens all of the doors.

  • You receive a passport that accompanies you throughout the day as you participate in non-competitive, hands-on activities.
  • You meet other students at your level in your Konversationsgruppe, where you have a guided transition into the German-only environment (or, if you are an advanced student, you lead one).
  • You then proceed to seminars and workshops of your choice where you can explore aspects of German-speaking countries that you would not experience in a traditional classroom setting.
  • You hear and speak German with seminar leaders and their peers while learning about the modern and traditional cultures in which the language is spoken.
  • The souvenirs you take away from the experience are not only scrapbook items and a t-shirt, but also a new confidence and passion for the language.

Advanced Speakers: Here’s Something for You!

  • Stammtischleiter:
This is for native speakers, advanced students, and exchange students who would be willing to serve as StammtischleiterInnen. These students will encourage and assist other students in speaking German during lunch.
  • Advantaged Speaking Assistants:
This includes all native speakers, advanced students, and exchange students who would be willing to assist with conversation groups and/or seminars.

If you are interested, please provide the following to your instructor before Spring Break:

  • Your name and contact information (phone and e-mail).
  • Your course number or level.
  • $15.
  • Your T-shirt size (S, M, L, XL, or XXL).
