How hard is it?
- German is not difficult to learn. German is historically
related to English and shares many words and structures with English. With two
years of university German you can begin to function well—reading, writing,
speaking, and understanding spoken German—with native speakers in everyday
situations. You will have the basis for developing advanced and specialized
ability in German.
Why is UTA the Place to Study German?
- UTA has useful programs in German: Literature, Culture, Languages,
Business and Teaching. In addition to excellent programs in literature,
teaching, and language, UTA is the only place in the Metroplex where you
can combine business and German into one degree. You can also receive a
B.A. and an M.A. in German, and a Ph.D. (in Humanities) here at UTA.
- It fulfills the language requirement using a coordinated package
of materials. You can meet the UTA Foreign Language Requirement
by taking our one-year intensive or two-year sequenced program. If you
have had some German within the last five years, it is also possible that
your placement test scores will allow you to start at UTA at a higher level,
which will give you college credit for levels earned, as well as the opportunity
to receive grades for those credits.
- Take just three more courses for a minor in German. With
just three more courses beyond the requirement, you can have a minor in German
and be eligible for the Goethe Institute proficiency certification, which
is recognized the world over.
- UTA is a testing center for internationally recognized German proficiency
certificaiton. Since UTA is a testing center for the Goethe Institute,
after six semesters you can take the Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache
test at our on-campus site. Other testing sites include Houston, Texas.
- German students at UTA are eligible for the German Honors Society. Upper
level students with a good grade point average in German are eligible for
memberhsip in the prestigious national German Honors Society, Delta Phi Alpha.
- UTA has exciting courses. We use up-to-date and interesting materials in all our language, literature, culture, and business classes. Often we incorporate video and computer information directly into our courses, providing you with current thought on all issues.
- Any extra-curricular activities? O ja!! The UTA German
Club is active on campus and is always looking for new members and new ideas
for sharing an interest in things German. Students meet on Wednesdays to
speak German, hear a speaker, or plan activities. German Club members make
field trips to New Braunfels, Texas, and Germany, as well as closer places
in the Metroplex. German immigrant culture is alive and well in Texas, and
there are many German events in and around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
