Graduate Certificate in French and Spanish

• Students who are currently enrolled in the Masters of Arts program in Modern Languages and who complete the requirements for the degree, are eligible to enroll in the Certificate program in the complementary language by submitting the appropriate application form to the academic graduate advisor.
  
  
• Students who have earned a B.A. in either French or Spanish from an accredited institution may seek admission into the Certificate Program in order to continue studying their discipline at a more advanced level and to earn 18 graduate hours to meet minimum SACS accreditation requirements for teaching at institutions of higher education in the State of Texas.
  
  
• Students who have received an M.A. in Modern Languages with Concentration in French or Spanish and wish to return and complete the Certificate Program may do so with approval of the appropriate Graduate Studies Committee and the Dean of the Graduate School.
  
  
• Students who have earned an M.A. degree in a language from an accredited institution may seek admission into the Certificate Program in order to earn 18 graduate hours in the discipline to meet minimum SACS accreditation requirements for teaching at institutions of higher education in the State of Texas.
  
  
• All students who are accepted into the Certificate Program will be classified as “Special,” non-degree seeking students.
  
  
• Students who choose to switch from the certificate program to the M.A. degree program in Modern Languages are required to meet all entrance criteria for admission into the graduate program as stipulated by the Department of Modern Languages and the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington.

Requirements of the Certificate

• Students will be accepted into the Graduate Certificate Program only after showing proof of proficiency in French or Spanish through an already acquired degree in that language or by passing a proficiency exam.
  
  
  • Generally, a student with a bachelor's degree in a field other than French or Spanish may become an unconditionally admitted graduate student after fulfilling the upper level requirements in the language:
    
    
    • 18 hours of upper level French or Spanish or
      
      
    • A combination of coursework and testing.
      
      
• All students who are accepted into the Certificate Program, regardless of the language of concentration, will be required to take 18 graduate hours in the language.
  
  
  • Students who pursue the Certificate Program in French will be required to take 6 graduate courses denoted with the FREN prefix.
    
    
  • Students who pursue the Certificate Program in Spanish will be required to take 6 graduate courses with a SPAN prefix.
    
    
• Students in the Certificate Program will not be permitted to take courses with an MODL prefix.

Certificate Awards

• Students shall be awarded the Graduate Certificate in French or the Graduate Certificate in Spanish by the Department of Modern Languages and the Graduate School upon successful completion of the Certificate Program requirements, including a comprehensive examination and attaining a grade point of average of 3.0.
  
  
• The Certificate award will be posted to the student’s transcript.
  
  
• Time limit for the completion of the Certificate program is 6 years.
