Instructors' Resource: Multimedia Cabinet "How To" Guide

Purpose: This document will explain how to use the LAC's multimedia cabinet. Please contact the LAC at x25148 (Trimble Hall 307) if you require assistance with it.

  • Using the Multimedia Cabinet Computer:

    1. While pointing the projector remote at the multimedia cabinet projector (not the overhead projector if there happens to be one in the room), press the "RGB1" button.

    2. Next, slide out the keyboard tray on the side of the cabinet opposite the projector.

    3. There is also a USB cable (you may have to look for it since it can fall into the cabinet) next to the keyboard, should you require the usage of a USB device.

  • Using the Multimedia Cabinet DVD Player:

    1. While pointing the projector remote at the multimedia cabinet projector, press the "Video" button.

    2. Ensure that "DVD" is selected on the Radioshack media switch box located on top of the Pioneer DVD player.

    3. Press the power button on the DVD player and then operate the DVD player as you normally would.

    4. Please note that there is also a DVD player remote that you may use.

  • Using the Multimedia Cabinet VCR:

    1. While pointing the projector remote at the multimedia cabinet projector, press the "Video" button.

    2. Ensure that "VCR" is selected on the Radioshack media switch box located on top of the Pioneer DVD player.

    3. Press the power button on the VCR (if it is not already turned on), then operate the VCR as you normally would.

  • Using a Laptop With the Multimedia Cabinet:

    1. While pointing the projector remote at the multimedia cabinet projector, press the "RGB1" button.

    2. Connect your laptop to the multimedia cabinet via the laptop connection cable (see diagram at right). If you do not understand how to do this, please request assistance from the LAC.

    3. If you require audio while using a laptop, please connect the audio jack to the laptop.

    4. If you require access to the internet and / or network while using a laptop, please connect the network cable to the laptop.

    5. On the top of the multimedia cabinet, next to the volume control, press the desktop / laptop selector switch (F on image 4); it is the square button above the volume control knob. Ensure that the light above the laptop icon is illuminated.

    6. On some laptops, you might need to enable the "external monitor" function. Consult your laptop's manual if you do not know how.

    7. IMPORTANT: When you are finished using your laptop, and have disconnected it from the multimedia cabinet, please be sure that you press the laptop / desktop selector button again in order to return the multimedia cabinet to "desktop" mode. This is much appreciated by the LAC staff!

  • Shutting Down the Multimedia Cabinet:

    When you have finished using the multimedia cabinet, please complete the following steps to ensure a smooth shutting down process:

    1. Check that you have safely disconnected any laptops or USB devices from the multimedia cabinet.

    2. Shut down the computer:

      1. Click start
      2. Select "turn off computer"
      3. Then click "turn off" from the menu

    3. Shut down the projector: While pointing the remote at the multimedia cabinet press and hold the "off" button until the projector turns off (it may take a few moments).

    4. Turn off the VCR and / or DVD player if you used them. Just press the power button on the VCR or DVD player, respectively.

    5. Press the main power button located on top of the multimedia cabinet directly below the power outlet.

    6. The LAC staff will do the rest.
