About Us
The Department of Modern Languages (MODL) offers
undergraduate and graduate degrees in language, literature, and culture
to students who want to learn French, German, Portuguese, Russian,
or Spanish.
Our Mission
Learning other languages is an important part of an well-rounded liberal
arts education. The
Department of Modern Languages upholds the mission of the UTA
College of Liberal Arts by
- Enabling students to develop basic competencies
and defined proficiency levels in any of several modern languages.
Language learning is skills development. To this end, MODL offers
a full range of language offerings, from beginning to advanced
courses. All four language skills—speaking,
listening, reading, and writing—are developed.
- Helping
students to prepare for the workforce through specialized courses
and degree options.
Language competency can be the primary focus in
careers such as teaching and government service or a distinguishing asset
for careers in fields such as the travel, health care, and international
business.
- Providing students with the tools for understanding
the diversity of human culture as represented in several of the world's
languages and literatures.
Through literature and language classes, students gain the insights
needed to appreciate the world views of people in other countries
and cultures and, inversely, to learn more about themselves by knowing
what people elsewhere think about them and their culture.
