Objectives
In Portuguese 1441 and 1442, the main objective of the courses is to
develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and
writing in the Portuguese Language. All four components will be weighted
equally throughout the semester. Grammar is also highly emphasized.
Mastery of the grammatical structures will enhance your ability to
communicate in and comprehend Portuguese.
Chapter Exams
The course exams will be given only on the dates indicated on
the syllabus. You will be tested over material from the text, assignments,
and other classroom activities. (Only under extenuating circumstances can
an exam be made up. The student must provide documentation of the reason
for not being able to take the exam on the scheduled day.)
Quizzes
Quizzes will cover specific topics, i.e., verbs, vocabulary, etc.
They will usually be announced the day before the quiz. The quizzes cannot
be made up.
Workbook and Other Assigments
Workbook assignments will be collected at random.
The instructor will keep the student updated as to pages due, etc.
Dialogues
- Daily Oral Dialogues
- There will be daily practice on speaking. Students will
perform the dialogues from the book. Students will be graded on fluency and
pronunciation.
- Oral Dialogue Performance
- Each semester there will be a dialogue that a group
of students will perform for the class. They can choose any situation or
topic that has been covered and create their own dialogue.
Attendance
Learning a foreign language is a cumulative process and requires
dedication by the learner. The student must be in class regularly in order
to achieve a passing grade. If a student has no more than 4 hours of absences
per course, 2 points will be added to the final grade average.
Missed quizzes, dialogues or dated assignments cannot be made up.
Please note that it is university policy to NOT drop students
for excessive absences or for non-attendance. It is the student's
responsibility to withdraw from the course. Classes will begin at 10:00
and 11:00 a.m. sharp and you must be in your seat and ready to begin class.
(Two tardies equal one absence.)
Language Acquisition Center (LAC)
