Grade Distribution and Course Grade

For 1441 & 1442 (each)

  • 20% Final Exam
  • 40% Two Chapter Exams
  • 20% Quizzes
  • 10% Workbook and other assignments
  • 5% Daily Oral Dialogues
  • 5% Dialogue Performances

Students will receive two separate grades for the mini-intensive course. One at the end of 1441 and one for 1442. After you take the final exam for 1441, your instructor will give you a grade report. The grade for 1442 is unrelated to the grade you earn for 1441. Although you will be completing the requirements for 1441 and 1442 in one semester, 1441 and 1442 should be viewed as two different courses.

Texts

  • Português Básico Para Estrangeiros, Rejane de Oliveira Slade.
    • Textbook, 2aEdição-1999,
    • Workbook
    • CD Set A

Objectives

In Portuguese 1441 and 1442, the main objective of the courses is to develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Portuguese Language. All four components will be weighted equally throughout the semester. Grammar is also highly emphasized. Mastery of the grammatical structures will enhance your ability to communicate in and comprehend Portuguese.

Chapter Exams

The course exams will be given only on the dates indicated on the syllabus. You will be tested over material from the text, assignments, and other classroom activities. (Only under extenuating circumstances can an exam be made up. The student must provide documentation of the reason for not being able to take the exam on the scheduled day.)

Quizzes

Quizzes will cover specific topics, i.e., verbs, vocabulary, etc. They will usually be announced the day before the quiz. The quizzes cannot be made up.

Workbook and Other Assigments

Workbook assignments will be collected at random. The instructor will keep the student updated as to pages due, etc.

Dialogues

Daily Oral Dialogues
There will be daily practice on speaking. Students will perform the dialogues from the book. Students will be graded on fluency and pronunciation.

Oral Dialogue Performance
Each semester there will be a dialogue that a group of students will perform for the class. They can choose any situation or topic that has been covered and create their own dialogue.

Attendance

Learning a foreign language is a cumulative process and requires dedication by the learner. The student must be in class regularly in order to achieve a passing grade. If a student has no more than 4 hours of absences per course, 2 points will be added to the final grade average. Missed quizzes, dialogues or dated assignments cannot be made up. Please note that it is university policy to NOT drop students for excessive absences or for non-attendance. It is the student's responsibility to withdraw from the course. Classes will begin at 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. sharp and you must be in your seat and ready to begin class. (Two tardies equal one absence.)

Language Acquisition Center (LAC)

The CDs that accompany the textbook are available for use only in the LAC. The CDs provide you with the repetition necessary to master the skills mentioned. All materials checked out at the LAC front desk require a valid student ID. For hours of operation and other details about the LAC, see the LAC Guide.

The Portuguese audio is also available online via MODL Moodle. Log into MODL Moodle using your NetID and follow the links to your Portuguese course.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be dealt with severely, per "Regents' Rules and Regulations, Part One, Chapter VI, Section 3, Subsection 3.2, Subdivision 3.22."
