The Center for Post Soviet and East European Studies
(CPSEES)

The Center for Post-Soviet and East European Studies was established in 1968 to coordinate all activities involving The University of Texas at Arlington with that area of Eastern Europe formerly designated as 'other Socialist Countries' as well as with the former USSR, including the three Baltic Republics of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania and the twelve Commonwealth of Independent States of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine.

The Center performs five basic functions:

  • Research, which includes academic, political, linguistic, and economic activities.
  • Studies, which are comprised of interdisciplinary classes that are constantly being developed by integrating several disciplines, such as history, political science, and Russian or Russian and English.
  • Translation, including English to Russian, Russian to English, and other translations for commercial or academic clients (for a reasonable fee).
  • Exchange, through programs between The University of Texas at Arlington and countries, such as Russia, the former Yugoslavia, Romania, and Ukraine.
  • Study Abroad, since 1970 annual programs have been undertaken by the Center. Travel and study programs have been conducted to the former Soviet Union and to the Peoples' Republic of China. The Center emphasizes study abroad as a method to greatly increase one's knowledge and cultural understanding.
