Intensive Russian Studies at UTA

There are many opportunities to study Russian intensively both at the University of Texas at Arlington and at other academic institutions throughout the United States.

For the past several years, students at UTA have had the opportunity to study Russian intensively during the summer sessions. Studying any language intensively gives the student the unique opportunity to focus immensely on the target-language, or in our case, Russian.

Consider a few advantages of studying Russian intensively:

  • Better retention of the language because you are in class 4–5 days per week.
  • Greater ability to build upon what is learned previously in the classroom.
  • Greater speed in reaching fluency.
  • Ability to earn up to 12 hours of Russian credit during the summer.
  • Support of The UTA Russian Section!

Please refer to the current course schedule or contact Dr. Lonny Harrison at 817.272.2388 or the office of the Department of Modern Languages at 817.272.3161 to check the availability of Russian courses during the summer.

Intensive Russian Studies in the United States

There are many great intensive Russian studies programs in the United States. We recommend that you undertake first- and second-year studies at UTA and then pursue these programs to augment your studies.

While we cannot list them all here, below we have listed what we feel are the top two most reputable intensive summer programs in the United States:

Middlebury College
Middlebury's summer programs set the international standard for excellence in language instruction, enabling students to undergo the equivalent of a year of college-level language study in 7- or 9-week intensive summer sessions. Five of their summer schools—French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish—also offer six-week graduate programs that lead to the Master of Arts or to Middlebury's unique Doctor of Modern Languages degree. Middlebury also offers large need-based grants to students.

Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS)
The Russian Summer Intensive Program at Monterey Institute of International Studies is among the best-known and reputable programs in the country. MIIS offers quality language instruction emphasizing language acquisition in its cultural context. Their faculty and staff are highly qualified. They include native-level former and current instructors at some of the best Russian language schools in the country, such as the Translation and Interpretation Program at MIIS, Defense Language Institute in Monterey, and Stanford University.
