Study Abroad Opportunities

Once you have started your Russian studies, study abroad gives the truly wonderful opportunity to experience the language and to learn at a much more rapid rate. Opportunities to study and travel in Russia exist through UTA’s own Summer Study Abroad Program, as well as programs throughout the United States.

UTA Summer Study Abroad in Voronezh, Russia

Earn six UTA credit hours while studying abroad at Voronezh State University with a group of faculty and students from the UTA Russian Section of the Department of Modern Languages.

Program includes intensive study and practice in Russian and a packed itinerary of cultural excursions. Space is limited, so those interested should contact the Russian Section early in Fall semester. See the following links for pictures and stories from previous trips.

Noteworthy Study Abroad Programs in Russia

American Councils for International Education ACTR/ACCELS
"American Councils' academic year Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) is designed to maximize linguistic and cultural immersion in Russian society while providing key logistical support and individualized attention to U.S. participants. The academic program serves both graduate and undergraduate students; it is designed to improve participants' oral, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in Russian language and to develop their knowledge of Russian history, politics, culture and society. The academic year program is comprised of two semesters, each providing at least 15 weeks of class and seven-to-ten days of group, in-country travel." Programs offered include undergraduate and graduate studies. Up to 32 hours of undergraduate credit may be earned and up to 30 hours of graduate credit may be earned through ACTR's programs. Locations of study include: Moscow, Vladimir, and St. Petersburg.

Middlebury College's School in Russia
"The C.V. Starr Middlebury College School in Russia offers three unique opportunities for students who wish to immerse themselves in the study of Russian language and culture. Unlike many American programs in Russia, in which students are segregated from regular university and community life, our programs in Irkutsk, Moscow, and Yaroslavl have been carefully designed to encourage linguistic and cultural integration. Through a flexible and demanding academic program, and with a variety of local contacts outside of the university, we strive to allow students maximum independence in their academic and social lives. In addition to improved Russian language ability, this level of independence allows students to develop practical survival skills for later work or study in the country."

Truman State University through CCIS
This is an undergraduate studies program created by Truman State University in Missouri in conjunction with the GRINT Centre for Education in Moscow, which is located on the campus of the Moscow University for Humanities. The University of Arizona's program in Russia is also hosted by GRINT.

Financial Considerations

Contrary to popular belief, study abroad is not too expensive for everyone. Various grants, scholarships, and loans are available to those who apply to them.

While UTA has limited scholarships for studying abroad, the U.S. government has set up several scholarship funds for those who qualify. Among those are the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, and the NSEP David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships.
