Requirements for a Major in Spanish

The worksheet will help prospective and current students chart a major in Spanish and will help transfer students see the credits they have and those they will need.

• Basic Requirements
  
  
  • In  order to major in Spanish, students are required to take SPAN 1441, SPAN 1442, SPAN 2313, SPAN 2314 or equivalent; plus 24 hours at the 3000/4000 level, at least nine of which must be at the 4000 level.
    
    
  • Please note that all Spanish majors are required to take
    
    
    • SPAN 3303 Advanced Conversation
    • SPAN 3314 Advanced Grammar
    • SPAN 3315 Advanced Compositon
      
      
  • However, students who grew up speaking Spanish at home are considered to be Heritage Speakers of Spanish and are not permitted into these two classes. Instead, they are required to take SPAN 3304/3305 Spanish for Heritage Speakers. If you are not sure whether you are a heritage speaker or not, please contact the head of the Spanish section, Dr. Chris Conway, for an appointment. He can be reached at conway@uta.edu.
    
    
• Although the present catalogue states that certain 4000 level courses (such as SPAN 4310, SPAN 4311, SPAN 4314 and SPAN 4315) require SPAN 3320 or SPAN 3321 as prerequisites, it is our policy to allow students into all 4000 level literature courses if they have taken two 3000 Spanish courses.
  
  
• All linguistics courses at the 4000 level (except SPAN 4339) have SPAN 3319 as their prerequisite.
  
  
• In order to succeed in their 4000 level literature courses, it is the student's responsibility to take as many 3000 level courses as possible before entering the 4000 level, especially SPAN 3315, which will train him/her to meet the stringent writing requirements of these advanced courses.
  
  
  • Non-heritage speakers should typically take SPAN 3303 and SPAN 3314 concurrently, then in the following semester SPAN 3315 and SPAN 3311 or SPAN 3312 before enrolling in a 4000 level literature course.
    
    
  • Heritage speakers might typically take SPAN 3304/3305 and SPAN 3311 or SPAN 3312 in one semester and then in the following semester take SPAN 3315 before entering the 4000 level literature courses. Rushing into 4000 level literature courses with only two 3000 level courses—while technically allowed—is an unwise course of action that may place the student at risk of underperforming in an advanced class.

Please note: Beginning in the Fall of 2006, the requirements for the Spanish Major will change in substantive ways. These changes will primarily affect students who declare their major beginning in the Fall of 2006, not existing majors. Please check back on this Web page for further information.
